Brain Development of 29 Day Old Embryo : The cerebral cortex--the most prominent feature when we think of a human brain--derives from the forebrain. This region is responsible for reason, planning, emotion, and problem solving, and by the end of the second trimester it is the primary visible structure. If you examine the surface of the cerebral cortex, you'll see convoluted folds; the raised surfaces are known as gyri and the "trenches" are sulci. These irregular folds provide greater surface area for cell-to-cell communication and interaction, increasing the brain's complexity.

Neural development refers to the processes that generate, shape, and reshape the nervous system, from the earliest stages of embryogenesis to the final years of life. The study of neural development aims to describe the cellular basis of brain development and to address the underlying mechanisms. The field draws on both neuroscience and developmental biology to provide insight into the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which complex nervous systems develop. Defects in neural development can lead to cognitive, motor, and intellectual disability, as well as neurological disorders such as autism, Rett syndrome, and intellectual disability.
